With three weeks left to Hari Raya Aidilfitri, festive Raya songs can already be heard booming over the loud crowd in shopping malls, supermarket shelves are lined with a variety of mouthwatering sweet delicacies such as pineapple tarts and kuih lapis, and green-coloured decorations accessorise our Singapore streets, lending a festive atmosphere of the upcoming Hari Raya season. Meanwhile, families are busy shopping for new clothes, and moms (or dads!) are planning their Raya menu for their guests.
And if you are a beauty lover, you are probably already scouring through YouTube, looking for makeup tutorials to inspire your look for this special season. From the minimal and neutral to the bold and glam, there is a myriad of makeup looks for you to choose from that, frankly, you might be at a loss as to which look you should go for.
Well, if you are feeling particularly adventurous with your Hari Raya makeup this year, might we suggest incorporating green eyeshadow in your look? Seeing as how the colour green signifies the festive Hari Raya period, adding this fresh, nature-centric shade will be perfect for your makeup look. Just follow our tips below and you will be rocking a flawless green eye look in no time.
Stay Safe with Olive Green
With the various shades of green available, from the bright and majestic emerald green to the light and muted laurel green, you are probably wondering which shade would suit you best. As with all things makeup, you should base your decision on your own skin tone. If you have fair skin, go for lighter-shade greens such as mint green. Meanwhile, a deeper shade like emerald would look great against an olive skin tone. For darker skin, either go darker with a blue-based green or super bright with lime green.
However, if you are worried the shade you choose ends up not working with your skin tone, the safest bet is to go with olive green. This shade is muted enough that it will work with any skin tone, yet will still pop against the rest of your makeup.
Stay Within Your Eyelid Area
If you wish to create a smokey eye for your Hari Raya look, keep the smokiness within your eyelids and avoid blending it out onto the outer corner. This will prevent your eye makeup from veering into Smudge City, which you definitely do not want happening while you are out visiting — who has the time for touch-ups with all the delicious food waiting to be devoured?
To achieve a “confined” smokey eye, opt for a matte green eyeshadow shade and blend it into your crease. This will create more definition to your eye look, thus keeping it from looking flat. You can also add the same matte green shade to your lower lash line, smudging it just a little, taking care not to blend it too far down your undereye area.
For a glamorous eye look, apply a layer of shimmery green eyeshadow on top of your base eyeshadow. Remember, only put the eyeshadow on your eyelid; do not get the shimmer onto your crease or beyond because this will only turn your eye makeup into a mess. To minimise glitter fallout, dampen a small flat eyeshadow brush and use it to pack the shimmery eyeshadow onto your lid. The moisture will not only ensure the glitter stays on your lid, but also intensify the green shade.
Keep the Rest of Your Makeup Neutral
When you are incorporating a colourful shade to your eye look, it is important to keep everything else neutral and minimal so the focus stays on your eyes. If you go for pops of colour on other areas as well like your lips and cheeks, the different colours in your makeup might clash with each other, turning your look into a major faux pas.
For your base, opt for a lightweight foundation, BB cream or tinted moisturiser to create a natural-looking finish. To reduce the appearance of imperfections such as blemishes or hyperpigmentation, use a tiny tapered brush and spot conceal those areas. This technique will allow you to achieve flawless-looking skin without resorting to cakey layers of makeup.
For cheeks, go with a nude shade based on your skin tone — peach or salmon pink shades for fair skin, rose or deeper pink shades for olive skin, and mauve or reddish-brown shades for deeper skin tones. To add some glow to your skin, dab a bit of cream highlighter on your cheekbones and blend it in with your fingers so it melts into the rest of your makeup. Not enough glow? Set the cream highlighter with a powder one to amp up the radiance.
Last but not least, your puckers! Again, choose a shade that is considered nude for your skin tone to give you a “my-lips-but-better” look. Fairer skin tones would typically go for baby pinks or peach, olive skin tones look great in mauve shades while deeper skin tones can get away with a deep pink or brown shade.
