Effortless Picnic Plan For Two

The sunny, tropical weather in Singapore is probably one of the best reasons there are to head out and enjoy a picnic with your partner. Be it a casual date, a celebration between the two of you or just for the fun of eating and being in the outdoors, a picnic for two is definitely a great way to spend some time together and talk about everything under the sky. However, the warmer weather can make the choices of food and beverage that you pack a little tricky. But fret not, we have got a list of them that you may like to make use of to help you out a little. Here goes!

Ham & Cheese Canapes

First up, some light bites that you can kickstart. These are great for the picnic as their sizes are perfect for enjoying the food in a single mouthful? Make things a whole lot less messy too. Make these delicious canapes and watch your loved one’s eye sparkle with delight when you bring them out at the picnic. A light, refreshing and assembly-only recipe that cannot go wrong even for the ones that can never cook even to save their life. Here’s what you will need:

  • 50 grams of cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tablespoon of sour cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Dijon mustard
  • Rye crackers or your preferred cracker
  • 3 slices of ham (chunks of sausages works perfectly too!)
  • Handful of blueberries
  • Sliced strawberries
  • Coarsely grounded black pepper
  • Shallow containers for efficient packing

With your electric mixer, beat the cream cheese, sour cream, and mustard together. Then spread a generous amount of the mixture on your choice of crackers. Next, stack the slices of ham and halve it. Stack them up again and cut them into smaller pieces that are approximately 2-centimetre cubes. Then top the prepped crackers with any combination that you like using the stacked ham, blueberries and sliced strawberries. Garnish all canapes with sprinkles of the black pepper. Easy! Now pack these delicious babies into shallow containers and pop them into the fridge till you are ready to have your picnic basket loaded.

Tomato & Basil Pasta Salad

This refreshingly tasty pasta is so good, we are sure that your partner and you will find it hard to stop at one mouthful. On top of that, the recipe is also another quick and easy one that will not have you breaking into a sweat before you are done. Without further ado, here’s all that you will need:

  • 2 hands full of cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of minced garlic
  • ¼ red onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt and pepper each
  • 1/4 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 30 grams of cooked fusilli pasta (or your favourite pasta)
  • 1 cup of. fresh basil leaves
  • 1 cup of baby spinach

In a heated pan, pour the olive oil in to warm up. Toss in the onions, garlic, salt, pepper and oregano into the pan. When the onions turn translucent, pop in the tomatoes and basil leaves. Leave it in for a minute and then pour in your cooked pasta. Stir around and coat your pasta with the mixture. Serve up in a container and let it cool before covering it up to bring it out with you.

Fruit Infused Water

Keep yourself cool and hydrated without a heap of calories with fruit infused water. In a large sealable jug of water, pop in any fruits that you have at hand (like the blueberries and sliced strawberries that you got for the above canapes recipe) and some slices of lemons for a refreshing touch. Give the drink a few stirs to bruise and release some flavour of the fruits. Then place the mixed drink in the fridge to chill or freeze it ( it will melt slowly during your journey there and keep the drink cold throughout the picnic) and bring it out with a towel wrapping it when you are ready to leave. If you do not have the time to wait for all the chilling to happen, pour the drink into thermos flasks and pop in some ice cubes! Alternatively, you can go with bottles of water and a bottle of champagne, with ice cubes in a small styrofoam box or thermos flask.

Making It Perfect

With all the food and drinks settled, you will need several items to make the day out a real deal of a picnic. The key with that is all in the details. A large picnic mat that suffices for the two of you and your belongings to fit comfortably, some insect repellent patches, a trash bag for any unwanted items while you are out, some card games to play together, your dining utensils and drinking glasses. Go fancy with some flowers, cushions and proper dining and drink wares instead of the disposable kinds as they make a whole lot of difference in the experience (sounds pretentious and quite the bit to carry with you but it is going to be so worth it!). And of course, hats and sunscreen to protect your skin from the harmful Ultraviolet rays and aid in keeping freckles at bay. Enjoy!
