Fabulous Grill Recipes

You would have probably heard of those new-fangled grilling machines that are guaranteed to turn any meal into a low-fat feast. Simply slap on some meat and see the fat drip away. Amazingly enough, these gizmos do actually work. The basic premise is that when you grill over high heat, foods like meat, poultry, fish and vegetables not only retain more vitamins but the fat content is also lowered.

What’s even better is that grilling machines allow you to grill in any weather, from the comfort of your kitchen countertop. In fact, they are so portable, people have been known to keep one at home and one in the office, so they can whip up healthy meals in minutes, no matter where they are. And the best part is they are not just for chicken. From grilled cheese sandwich or hot dogs to scrambled egg whites (yes, you heard us right), you can pile on almost any combination of food and watch fat disappear in minutes.

A sloping grilling surface is what makes it so easy for all that fat to trickle into the convenient dripping tray. After realising I actually own one of these nifty appliances, I decided to conduct my little impromptu “fat-reducing” test. I dug my grilling machine out of the farthest reaches of my back cupboard and cooked up one pound of lean hamburger. In five minutes, the meat was done and more than a quarter of a cup of fat had been collected in the dripping tray. I definitely call that fat reduction in my book and I plan on putting my newly rediscovered grilling machine to a lot of use. Just do not forget to use that dripping tray or you will have a big mess afterwards.

Home Range Burgers

Buffalo is the perfect alternative to beef, which is relatively higher in fat. once you sink your teeth into one of these burgers, you will barely know the difference. In fact, my children even begged for more! The ingredients needed to whip up these delicious Home Range burgers are easy:

  • 1 pound lean beef or buffalo meat
  • A quarter cup of BBQ or chilli sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Combine these ingredients and shape them into four patties. Toss all four into the grilling machine for four to six minutes, and voila! Serve them with a whole-wheat bun and crisscross potato fries or quick grilled vegetables on the sides.

 

Southwest Fajitas

These flavourful fajitas have just the right amount of spice and are a breeze to make. Serve them with whole-wheat tortillas and top with fresh lettuce, tomato and salsa. The following are the ingredients that you need:

  • 4 to 6 boneless and skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup onion, peeled and sliced
  • Half a cup of red bell pepper, sliced
  • 2 fresh jalapeno peppers, seeded and sliced
  • A quarter cup of lime or lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons of canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons of low-sodium soy sauce
  • Half a teaspoon of cumin
  • Half a teaspoon of garlic powder
  • Half a teaspoon of dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Trim chicken of all fat and cut into thin slices. Combine all the ingredients together in a medium bowl and mix very well. cover and refrigerate for at least an hour. Separate chicken from vegetable mixture. Preheat the grilling machine for five minutes. Spread vegetables on the machine and top with chicken slices. Grill for four to five minutes.

 

Savoury Steaks

Marinating these steaks in red wine makes them very moist and flavourful. You can choose to serve them with sweet potato fries and salad by the sides. Here is what you need:

  • 4 to 6 sirloin tip steaks
  • 2 cloves of crushed fresh garlic
  • 1 cup of dry red wine
  • Half a teaspoon of black pepper
  • A quarter cup of low-sodium soy sauce
  • Canola or olive oil

Trim all fat from steaks. In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients except oil and mix well. cover and refrigerate at least four hours. Next, preheat the grilling machine. Remove the steaks from the marinade and pat dry completely with a paper towel. Brush lightly with oil and grill three to five minutes.

 

Clean Up Tips

Be sure to remember to use the little drip tray that comes with the grill. This is what catches all the fat as it drips off. For best results, clean the grill while it is still warm but remember to unplug it first! You can use the small spatula that usually comes with the griller to scrape any residue off.
