What does Kylie Jenner, Angelina Jolie and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have in common? All of these three celebrities in the entertainment industry have plump, full lips some of us can only dream of having (or obtain by going for lip injections). Beyond daydreams, professional lip treatments or even experimenting with the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge, those of us who have been dealt the thin-lipped card can only attempt to achieve the appearance of fuller lips by clever use of makeup.
6 Steps to Fuller Lips
Fortunately for us, makeup can easily be used to trick the eye into thinking that our lips are fuller than they actually are. For tips on how to transform your thin puckers into Kylie Jenner status, read on to find out more:
Hydrate Your Lips
Just like how you would moisturise your skin before applying makeup, your lips need to be hydrated with a lip balm to reduce the likelihood of them getting drier throughout the day. Plus, applying a moisturising lip balm can make your lips look plumper, a step thin-lipped gals will benefit from to create the illusion of fuller lips. Any lip balm will do to hydrate your lips, but to give your lips an extra boost in the plump department, look for one that contains peppermint oil. Peppermint will encourage the blood circulation of your lips, creating a sort of “swollen” appearance to the lips and making them look fuller. Leave the lip balm on for about five minutes to let it really hydrate your lips before following up with the next step.
Exfoliate Those Flakes and Peels
Dry, peeling lips are not a cute look, and even more so when you are trying to make them appear fuller. Plus, lip products just won’t go on smoothly on dry lips, making exfoliating them an essential step you can’t skip. If you don’t have a lip scrub, simply use an old toothbrush, wet the bristles and buff your lips in a circular motion, creating a smoother texture. Another alternative is to get your DIY mode on and create your very own homemade lip scrub. Simply combine a teaspoon of honey with a couple teaspoonfuls of sugar and gently massage this mixture into your puckers. You can choose to rinse the mixture off immediately or leave it on for five to ten minutes to allow the honey to hydrate your lips.
Conceal Those Lips
Yes, you read that right. Another important step towards making your lips appear fuller is by concealing them. Using a concealer or even a lightweight foundation, dab a bit of the product all over your lips and pat it slightly beyond your natural lip line to create a larger canvas. This way, when it comes to applying your lip product, you can cheat the fuller lip look by drawing on a “new” lip line above the original.
Highlight, Highlight, Highlight
Don’t worry, we’re not going to ask you to coat your entire lips in glitter and shimmer. All you need to create the illusion of fuller lips is by highlighting your Cupid’s bow, which is the “wave” in the centre of your upper lips. Just put a tiny smidge of highlighter on this area and your lips will immediately look plumper. Feel free to use a cream or powder highlighter here, or if you wish to intensify the highlight, layer on a powder highlight over the cream.
Overline Your Lips
Some makeup lovers shy away from lining their lips for fear of looking like they are stuck in the 90s, sporting an obvious lip line against the rest of their lipstick. However, if you choose the right shade of lip liner and apply it in the correct way, you can create the appearance of fuller lips easily. When choosing a lip liner, make sure the colour you select is one shade darker than the lip product you plan to wear. Next, when lining your lips, go slightly above your natural lip line when you reach your Cupid’s bow. Remember the concealing technique a couple of steps prior? Your concealed lips create the perfect canvas for you to overline your lips so it looks more natural, leaving you with fuller lips. Follow this up by filling your entire lips with your lipliner. This will not only create the illusion of fuller lips, but also lengthens the staying power of your lipstick.
Brighten the Centre of Your Bottom Lip
Once you have finished applying your lip liner and chosen lip product, finish off by adding a bit of brightness to your lips. Do this by applying another lip product that is one or two shades lighter than the first lip product you have applied onto your lips, and just dab it on the centre of your bottom lip. This will make your lips pop, thus creating a plumper appearance. Another way to brighten your lip area is by dabbing on some gloss onto the centre of your lips. You can either go with a clear lip gloss or one that is of a similar shade to your lip product.
